Get Familiar With Rewards Credit Cards

by on , under Credit, Uncategorized

Before considering particular rewards credit cards , you must be able to answer the question, ‘Do I pay my credit card bills in full each month?’ See, if you don’t pay your whole bill each month, meaning you carry a balance, rewards are not important. Instead you should be worried about finding a credit card with the lowest interest rate possible. It may seem like you are missing out on the party because rewards sound so appealing and fun, but in reality, for you, low interest trumps miles and points any day. You are financially much better off having low interest rates and no added perks than high interest rates and rewards. These would essentially be rewards that cost you money.

Rather than cash, many card issuers will reward you with loyalty points for each dollar you spend using the credit card. Once you earn enough points, you can redeem them for gift cards from retailers, electronics items, airline tickets, household merchandise or even cash. There is usually a complete catalog available that shows you how many points it takes to obtain a certain item. Card issuers may up the ante by providing more points for certain types of purchases, balance transfers or other specific transactions. Again, review the terms and conditions of your card issuer. They often have restrictions on how points can be redeemed, especially for travel purchases, and may subject unused points to forfeiture.

Rewards credit cards are those offering a wide range of incentives to card holders that encourage them to use these instruments in making everyday purchases. Participating merchants and service providers pay a small fee to the company issuing these rewards credit cards’ the “reward” comes into the equation when the company offers a percentage of this fee to the cardholder in some form, either as an outright case rebate or in the more of credits (usually called “points”) that can be redeemed for discounts on many different products and services.

With the increasing popularity of credit cards in America, it’s no surprise that credit card companies and banks continue to flood the market with all manner of cards–rewards credit cards, cash back credit cards, 0% APR credit cards–all in an effort to appeal to as many potential cardholders as possible by offering a wide variety of incentives for use. The major problem with the strategy, however, is that there’s often little explanation of exactly how credit card rewards work in their respective programs: what’s the difference, for example, between cash back cards and rewards credit cards? And which card will, in the end, save you more? The variety and sheer number of rewards programs leaves some potential cardholders confused about the actual market value of their “points” values.

When looking for a great mileage or rewards program, there are literally hundreds of credit cards to choose from. How are you supposed to pick the right one? Rewards cards are the perfect option for someone who likes to charge many of their everyday purchases to their credit card, but also wants a little something back. The trick to choosing the best reward card is to consider your spending habits. If you spend a lot on gas, a card with a higher percentage return on every day purchases is best. If you prefer to fly, a card that helps you earn miles would be the best choice for you.
