Is A Free Kindle Reader On The Cards For 2012?

When it was first launched, back in November of 2007, the first Amazon Kindle reader carried the hefty price tag of $ 399. Today, a little more than 4 years down the line, you can pick up the entry level Kindle 4 for only $ 79. In such a short time frame, that’s a very significant reduction.
It begs the question, how much lower can ebook reader prices fall? Could we even see Amazon giving away free Kindles at some point in the near to mid future? It might not be as far fetched as it sounds. I’m fairly confident that the Kindle 4 will be available for less than $ 50 by the summer of 2012.
It’s also quite likely that Amazon Prime subscribers might be eligible for free Kindle readers upon sign up. I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see this, possibly as early as the second half of 2012. Future sales of Kindle books, together with ongoing Amazon Prime subscriptions, will ensure that Amazon makes money – even when giving away their entry level readers for free.
